Deyron Labs graphic: Google says Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Search will be off for K-12 student accounts until administrators turn them on; Guided Learning in Classroom

What happened

On 3 November 2026 Chris Phillips, Google’s VP and General Manager for Education, published “Designing responsible AI for learning” on the Google blog. It announces Guided Learning in Google Classroom and a new default for school-managed student accounts.

Key details

  • Default: Google writes that access to these products “will be entirely off for K-12 student accounts until school administrators explicitly turn them on”. The post lists Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search.
  • Guided Learning: “Starting today, Guided Learning is globally available in Google Classroom”. It is anchored to class material, assigned by teachers, and gives teachers real-time insights.
  • Search pilot: Guided Learning for student accounts in Search starts in select U.S. schools “later this month”, then expands to other districts “in the coming months”.
  • Timing of the controls: Google says it will “share more specifics with schools in the coming months”. The post gives no dates for the default or the admin settings, and no figures.
  • Context reported elsewhere: The New York Times and newsletters reported that this means districts that keep AI off may also lose Search for students, and that some critics and U.S. senators had questioned Google’s AI push in classrooms. Google’s blog does not describe it in those terms, and we have not independently tested how the settings behave.

Why it matters

School IT administrators will need to decide, account by account, whether to enable Gemini and Search for students, and Google has not yet published the details of the controls. The key open question is how Search behaves in districts that choose to keep AI features off, which the post does not answer.
