What happened

On 7 October 2026, OpenAI announced that it is bringing GPT-6 to a much wider group of ChatGPT users. Its post says the first GPT-6 models reached paid customers last month. The rollout to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise started on 7 October. OpenAI says the rollout “expands to Free and Go tiers” starting the next day, 8 October. Enterprise access depends on workplace admin settings.

Paid tiers use GPT-6 Sol, and Free and Go tiers use GPT-6 Luna. The change applies to the Chat experience only: OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex are not changing in this release. The post also introduces Intelligent UI, which lets ChatGPT answer with interactive interfaces instead of plain text.

Key details

  • Reach: OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week.
  • Intelligent UI: answers can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms and charts. OpenAI’s examples include a road-trip map, a Sunday roast timeline, an interactive explanation of the Monty Hall problem, a bill splitter, a retirement savings calculator and a retro game. It says the interface is built from a library of native, streamable components and renders progressively as the model writes.
  • Speed, as reported by OpenAI: for questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. In an internal evaluation of everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High begins answering in the same time as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better than GPT-5.6 Extra High. OpenAI gives no method or sample size for either figure.
  • Quality claim without a number: OpenAI says GPT-6 addresses the key aspect of difficult questions more often than GPT-5.6. The post gives no figure.
  • Safety: OpenAI says GPT-6 resists attempts to bypass its safety training better and is better at recognizing the limits of its own capabilities. Details are in the system card, which we have not reviewed in full.
  • Not stated: the post gives no usage limits for Free users and no pricing.
  • Luna in the API: OpenAI’s model page lists GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens.

Why it matters

For people on the free plan, this is a model change rather than a feature add-on: from 8 October the default Free and Go experience is meant to run on GPT-6 Luna. Because OpenAI has not published free-tier limits, what you actually get per day is still unknown. Check how it behaves on your own tasks before relying on it.

Intelligent UI is the more visible shift. If the examples hold up, a question like “split this bill” or “plan my retirement savings” returns a small working tool instead of a paragraph. The risks are the usual ones for generated interfaces: check the numbers a calculator shows, because it is the model that built it. The speed figures are OpenAI’s own and have not been independently measured.
