What happened

On 31 October 2026, Apple published a press release on its China newsroom titled “Apple Intelligence is coming to China” (the page is in Simplified Chinese; the translations below are ours). Apple says a set of Apple Intelligence features will open for testing on 4 November in the latest iOS developer beta, and will reach users in China in December with the official release of iOS 27.3.

Apple also says it partnered with Alibaba to add support for Qwen, Alibaba’s AI model family, in some Apple Intelligence experiences: Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. The same day, a Xinhua report carried by CGTN described the deal as an Alibaba announcement and attributed the schedule to Alibaba.

Key details

  • Where Qwen appears (Apple): in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, including text and image understanding. In Siri, users can ask Qwen about photos and about documents such as PDFs and presentations. In Writing Tools, a Compose feature lets Qwen write original text from scratch.
  • How users reach it (Apple): by signing in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple.
  • What is Apple’s own (Apple): Apple says Apple Intelligence is “powered by generative models built by Apple”. Its release lists Apple-run features including Live Translation, rewrite/proofread/summarize in Writing Tools, Clean Up, Genmoji, natural-language photo search, notification and mail summaries, and type-to-Siri.
  • What is not included (Apple): Siri AI and the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026. MacRumors, citing Apple, adds that Image Playground is not available; Apple’s release as we read it does not mention it.
  • Devices and languages (Apple): iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone Air, with Siri and the device set to English and Simplified Chinese. Support for other platforms, such as Mac and iPad, will follow “after the necessary approvals”.
  • Claims attributed to Alibaba (via Xinhua/CGTN, not in Apple’s release): the Qwen feature is optional and users choose what information to share; Alibaba says it will not use user requests or generated responses to train its models; the feature is for users who buy an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China or whose device location and Apple Account region are both set to China. The report also says China’s cyberspace regulator completed a filing for seven on-device generative AI services, including Apple Intelligence, in July. We did not read the filing.
  • What Apple’s release does not say: how Qwen requests are processed, what data goes to Alibaba, or whether processing happens on the device or on servers. We found no privacy statement on this in the release.

Why it matters

For people in China, this is the first time Apple Intelligence becomes available on iPhones sold there, and the chatbot-style help inside Siri and Writing Tools will come from a Chinese model rather than from Apple’s partners elsewhere. For people outside China, nothing changes: the integration is limited to China, and Apple’s own features keep running on Apple’s models.

For the AI industry, it shows how a global hardware maker handles a market where it needs a local model partner: Apple keeps its own features and brings in Qwen for open-ended questions and generation, behind a separate sign-in. How that data is handled is the open question, and it is the thing to watch when the developer beta ships on 4 November and the iOS 27.3 release follows in December.
